Course Description:

The BTEC Tech Award Levels 1/ 2 in Health and Social Care is equivalent to a GCSE at grades 9 -1. It is an exciting and practical qualification, nationally recognised by colleges, universities and employers. It has strong vocational and work related links and is relevant to everyday life, equipping students for the world of work and potential apprenticeships. The practical nature of the course makes it attractive to future employers and universities alike. The course gives students a grounding in values underpinning the health and social sector, as well as exploring practical and vocational aspects of health and social care.

Course Units

3 units

Human lifespan development: Internal assessment (30%)

Students look at the life stages of development of a human being from birth through to old age.

Health and social care services and values Internal assessment 30%

Students work together to lead practical activities in a nursery, old people’s home and then organise a day trip to a local tourist attraction for a group of people with health and social care needs

Health and wellbeing; External exam assessment (40%)

Students answer short questions about health and well being

Assessment:

Coursework internally assessed: 60% teacher assessed, non examined portfolio,

Coursework internally assessed: 60% teacher assessed, non examined portfolio, Exam: 40% external exam unit (2 hours). Once completed you will then use your lesson time to perfect coursework.

Why should I study this course?

This dynamic course offers the opportunity to combine practical skills and academic knowledge. Students who continue with this subject of study frequently enter into nursing degrees or jobs in the health care sector. Others enter into primary teaching and childcare related jobs via the apprenticeship route. Vocational visits include mini placements at Chailey Heritage, and a variety of schools and pre schools, along with visits to care settings and The Queen Vic hospital. Additionally many students like this course as it combines coursework and exam – with no examined unit taking place in year 11.
